How do I prepare for chemical peel?

Preparation for your chemical peel at VITAL will depend on the type of peel you are having.

Your doctor may recommend a specific type of topical treatment during the 2-4 weeks before the procedure. It is also very important to be apply proper sun protection after the chemical peel takes place, to protect the delicate new skin.

How is a chemical peel performed?

After preparing the skin, the chemical peel is applied and the amount of time it stays on your skin differs according to the type of chemical peel. Some types of chemical peels are removed a few minutes after application while other types can be kept on the skin for several hours.

The whole process takes less than an hour and the doctor will discuss with you what you need to do to remove the peel at home. During the procedure, most patients experience a warm to somewhat hot sensation, which lasts about five to 10 minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. Cool compresses may be applied to help alleviate this stinging. A deeper peel may require pain medication during or after the procedure.
